Sohar Oman

A two-hour drive from Muscat, Sohar is the capital and largest city of the Al Batinah North Governorate. Once an ancient capital of the country and an important Islamic port town, Sohar is also credited as the home of legendary sailors like Ahmed bin Majid and Sinbad the Sailor. With a rich maritime history, it was traditionally a fishing village, but has since transformed into a major hub of commerce.

Sohar boasts the country’s largest port and industrial complex, handling almost 60 million tonnes of cargo. Sohar Port South and Sohar Freezone are considered among the world’s fastest-growing port and free zone developments.

There are many interesting sights to discover in Sohar, including the century-old Sohar Fort, which houses a museum exploring the city’s cultural and traditional past, the Sohar Corniche, the Sohar Handicraft Souq, the fish market, and the village of Heebi with its several ancient mud houses, where water is supplied from an old falaj that was used to irrigate local crops such as dates and papayas.
